Permits To Take Water in the Marsh Have Expired

As you may or may not be aware of the timeframe for the grandfathered Permit To Take Water has expired in Ontario, and as such this now means that every taker of water in excess of 50,000L per day in the province will require a valid Permit To Take Water administered from the Ministry of the Environment.

This means that any taker of water in excess of 50,000 liters per day without a valid Permit will be subject to penalty that ranges from having the taking halted on the spot (usually in August when water is most needed) and an order issued to apply for a permit, to the issuing of substantial fines and even court appearances.

The Ministry of the Environment Compliance and Enforcement Branch will be out in the Holland Marsh area this summer targeting takers of water without a valid Permit – beginning the first week of June when an “education” week will be taking place. Don’t let this be you! Keep your head’s up when the MOE comes to town and co-operate wherever possible.

The Holland Marsh Growers’ Association is working towards having a one-day Permit to Take Water Information session in partnership with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association and OMAFRA.

The day, location, and time have yet to be determined but it will be held shortly. This session will review the entire Permit To Take Water application line by line and address any questions that you may have.

If you have already started your application and need assistance, George Shearer, Permit To Take Water Specialist from OFVGA is available to assist you. Call anytime 519-763-6160 ext 219.

This session is FREE of charge and notification will be given as to its specifics.
